Winter species
Despite appearances winter isn't a quiet season for the Park's wildlife - far from it. The species that remain here for the winter have to work hard to survive in the harsh weather conditions and short days. Mountain hares and ptarmigan turn white to hide from their main predator, the golden eagle. Barn owls quarter the fields in the early dusk looking for prey. At the coast look out for divers and eider, which raft up in large groups close to the shore in winter.
Winter snow also gives you the chance to spot tracks of elusive pine marten and roe deer.
