Spring species

A good time to see woodland flowers before the leaf canopy shades them out. Butterflies, moths and bees are on the wing from the first warm, sunny days. The warmth also brings out reptiles to bask in the sun. Toads, frogs and newts mate and lay their eggs in newly-defrosted ponds. Black grouse strut their stuff at their lekking grounds. Summer migrant birds arrive from the South in April and May.
